In this already amazing New Year I thought I’d round up some Craft Trends looking forward into 2018
Over the last 5 years it seems like there has been a huge resurgence of handmade goods taking centre stage. This seems especially true for gifts and more and more people are now trying their hand at crafting. It’s also incredibly easy to get your hands on great quality materials and resources. Read on for my thoughts on what Craft Trends we might see in 2018!
Craft Trend Watch #1 – Creative Bullet Journaling
Bullet journaling has become hugely popular in recent years and I think we’re definitely going to see this continue well into 2018 & beyond. Bullet journalling offers a creative way to organise pretty much anything! There are many great examples of people who have shared their bullet journals with various online communities. I love seeing so many inspirational and creative ideas which turn a dull task into something much more interesting! There are no rules and no right or wrong which make bullet journals a great example of pure self expression.
Why not share yours with me for my next post?
Craft Trend Watch #2 – Screen Printing at Home
Screen printing has also become very popular due to its incredible diversity. Screen printing allows you to print on virtually any surface which makes for some very creative applications. Printing t-shirts, posters, bags and even coffee sacks yourself can be done relatively inexpensively. It’s now even easier to make your own screen printing equipment at home. With the rise of many different types of creative independent businesses, screen printing seems to add a touch of authenticity to a printed piece. Find out more about screen printing here.
Craft Trend Watch #3 – Pyrography
Well executed pyrography always seems to have a lot rustic charm to it. Pyrography is less common compared to a lot of other crafts, however I’ve definitely seen more of it in recent months. Customisations are relatively simple and can make great gifts. It’s fairly easy to burn on wooden spoons, chopping boards and candle holders, as long as they have not had a protective finish applied. I love pyrography and have been doing it for a number of years now. Pyrography tools can be picked up inexpensively from stores such as Hobbycraft (UK) or Michaels Stores (USA & Canada). Read more about different types of pyrography tools.

Craft Trend Watch #4 – String Art
String art was a common past time of the 70s, along with Macrame. It seems to have made a resurrgence over the last few years and, with such simple materials, it’s something anyone can try. Imagination is the key to string art. There are some truly amazing examples of what can be done with this medium online. String art is great because it can be combined with other craft techniques such as pyrography! I think we’ll see string art continue strong into this year. If you want to learn more, I did a tutorial on how to create Marvel character comic book themed string art.
Craft Trend Watch #5 – Papercraft
Paper Panda has been an inspiration in the craft community. She has shown that there are many wonderful things that can be done with this simple medium. With millions of different types of paper available now there are infinite things you can do. I’ve got a feeling that 2018 will see some excellent new craft projects with paper as the basis!
